Starting to build the Wood Duck 10

Actually I am cheating, I started March 19, before leaving to try out the Skerry. The Wood Duck 10 panels are obtained by puzzle joints, like the other CLC kayaks, in place of the conventional scarfs of the larger boats.

The puzzle joints are first glued on their edge (previous picture), then strengthened by a fiberglass stripe (also visible on the previous picture, before stratification), and lastly by a full coating of fiberglass in epoxy on the inside of the panels.   The two bottom panels are stitched along the keel joint with copper wire ties. The side panels are visible on the right of the picture.

The "book" is opened bottom up, and the four temporary bulkheads are stitched inside.

The ends of the panels are humidified in order to "soften" the 4 mm okoume plywood, because the torsion is savage on these panel extremities. The Wood Duck 10 is indeed very compact and there is little length to "place" the trnasition form the middle to the extremities.

The ends of the bottom panels are finally stitched and I am working on the side panels. The pieces of wood held by the clamps act as stiffeners for the temporary bulkheads, which are made of 3 mm sapelle plywood, which is thin...

The lovely little transom is stitched... but there is "room for improvement" in there!   The stern seen from the inside: I still have quite a lot a negociation to do!

There we are, everybody is in place. The last little hole at the bottom of the transom will be plugged with epoxy at gluing time.

The hull is fully stitched.   While the hull is getting used to be in one piece, I work on the decking. Like the hull's, the decking structure is temporary, and it wil be taken off at gluing time.   Decking and hull get acquainted to check that they fit together. It's a Chester Yawl in the background.
