Look how nice is the Wood Duck 12 of my Dad! This Wood Duck 10 is easy to carry at 16 kg.

Two compact kayaks with a large cockpit: the Wood Duck 10 and 12. At last a real alternative to the plastic "sit on top"!

For your safety, always wear approved personal flottation devices.
One must admit that those plastic "sit on top" kayaks are unbeatable to go "rock shaving" with their stable, light and watertight hull. On the other hand, they don't look good and the pleasure to be on the water sitting on a piece of plastic is not the same as it is with a nice looking wooden craft... But the fact is that the current sea kayaks are not fitted to the intimate visiting of the shoreline: too long, too "technic", too unpractical...
Now is the time to stop hesitating or regretting! Here is at last the solution you were longing for! Discover the superb "Wood Duck" kayaks, in 10 ft (3.05 m) and 12 ft (3.66 m).
Kayak "sit on top"
The Wood Ducks were designed by Nick Schade, founder of "Guillemot Kayaks", a world leader kayak kit maker.

Always ready on the car rack And bang, in the water!

Two kayaks which are both good looking and easy to use - Here are tow small kayaks designed for the simple pleasure to mess around on the water. With a large open cockpit and generous stability, the accent is on your comfort. But those little boats are fast and track well. You'll cover a lot of distance with them: despite their short length, their speed potential is excellent and their directional stability is strong in all conditions.

The most compact boats are also the ones which see the most use. No need for a boat trailer or launching ramp for those little guys: bang, on the car rack and bang, in the water! They are always ready for the slightest occasion to go on the water. With larger boats, you do think twice before starting the complex process that will eventually put you on the water. With a Wood Duck you're paddling almost before you finished formulating your intention to...

Their hull is built with thin marine plywood (okoume and sapelli ply) and covered inside and out with fiberglass set in epoxy. You won't be afraid to use them for real: landing on beaches won't hurt them and the occasional meetings with the bottom when "rock shaving" are soon forgotten.

Their capacity is generous so that all paddlers are welcome. Their cockpit is almost one meter long so that you can enter and exit easily, and not feel "stuck" inside like in a classical sea kayak. The Wood Duck 10 has a capacity of 110 kg and the Wood Duck 12 can carry 160 kg. A port gives access to the rear compartment (the front is open through the cockpit). Enough room to carry a picnic or light camping gear for the more adventurous.

More pictures of the Hybrid Wood Ducks

The Wood Duck Hybrid’s hull is identical to the standard Wood Duck’s, with computer-cut BS 1088 Okoume panels assembled with “puzzle joints” so it goes together very, very quickly.  Computer-cut molds are set into the hull with temporary hot glue.  These molds shape and support the deck during construction.  With the kit we include a mixture of dark and medium color western red cedar strips, plus white cedar strips for light accents.  The strips are milled with a “bead and cove” joint so that one slides into the next for perfect joinery.  While we offer suggested patterns, each builder can develop their own unique strip deck design as they assemble their kit.  Run riot with your creativity!  Almost anything is possible.  Parquet decks, anyone?

Once the deck pattern has been established and glued together, the entire deck is gently taken off the hull and the underside fiberglassed.  The molds are removed from the hull, then the deck epoxied back in place.  Finally, the top of the strip deck is fiberglassed and the cockpit and hatches are added.

The Wood Duck kits are available with a "hybrid" deck, a sapelle plywood deck, or with the standard okoume deck. The Wood Ducks are only available in "complete kits" (no "wood only" kits).

Those two Wood Ducks are just waiting for you!

Wood Duck is the common name of Aix Sponsa, which is a north american species, unknown in Europe. Wood Ducks live in wooded area along lakes, rivers and ponds.

Wood Duck

Wood ducks were over-hunted for their feathers, which were in strong demand, as much for ornaments as for fly fishing. They were also the victims of deforestation and extension of urban areas.
