Skerry Skerry Skerry
The Skerry under sail, the helmsman is comfortably seating on the bottom of the hull. The Skerry under oars: like our other boats, it is equipped with 2 sets of oarlock sockets, permitting rowing from the forward seat/decking when 2 on board, as well as the middle thwart. The Skerry demonstrating its load carrying capability: 2 adults and 3 kids on board and it doesn't even look like it is low in the water!

Simple to sail, easy to row, the Skerry is a boat to be used, not just owned, and furthermore it looks nice! This hull is so light (45 kg) that it won't stay in place!

Length : 4.58 m, beam : 1.37 m, weight : 45 kg. Sail area : 5.20 m2 or 7.2 m2.

Skerry

The Skerry weighs only 45 kg: you'll handle it as a (large) sailboard.

The Skerry is one of the few rowing hulls which are not "spoiled" by the required installations to make it an excellent sailboat. It is the boat for long treks: sailing when the wind is good, rowing when not. In both cases, you'll be going far and fast!
The sprit rig is easy to set and to use, powerful for its size, and all the spars are short enough to be stowed without hampering rowing. The hull is stable and offers sufficient of buoyancy to face a good chop with 3 adults on board.
It is also possible to fit the sliding gunter sloop rig of the Passagemaker to the Skerry, which provides 2 sqm. more sail area, at the cost of a bit less simplicity in rigging.

Two rowing stations allow several crew combinations while under oar, always keeping the best hull balance for optimum handling.

The Skerry is 15 ft long (4,58 m) by 1,37 m, with a draft of only 13 cm (76 cm with the board down). The sail area is 5,20 m2 for the sprit sail, 7.20 m2 for the sloop rig. The hull weight is 45 kg: no problem to carry it on the small car roof rack!

The sail kit transforms the Skerry into a sailing dinghy. That conversion can be made at the time of initial building or later on when the hull has already been tried with oars. The sailing kit contains the whole thing: sail and spars, rudder, daggerboard and sailing hardware. Please note that the sailing kit is contained in a box measuring 2.45 m by 0.55 m by 0.10 m.

No kit contains any oars. The hull kit contains one pair of oarlocks and one pair of oarlock sockets.

Building this kit is easy, thanks to the patended LapStitch system. All you'll need is a bit (a lot!) of patience and neatness to build this lovely "stitch and glue" hull. There are neither oars nor oarlocks in any of the kits.

The name "skerry" comes from the ancient norse "sker". In English, "skerry" is still used for rocks and small islands which are covered by high seas.

Skerry

More precisely, "skerry" is the name of rocks ans shoals found at the entrance of fjords, which are formed by the network of glacially formed valleys at their intersection with the seashore.
