"Stitch and glue" sea kayak design has progressed much at Chesapeake Light Craft over the last 15 years, thanks to the impulsion of our customers who helped us refine the boats's specifications. The Shearwater line is a recent addition to CLC's kayaks lineup, who commisioned Eric Schade (from Guillemot Kayaks) to create these three superb designs.

Elegant lines result in real performance. The sweeping sheerline complements the nicely balanced ends; there isn't an awkward hump or bump anywhere. The sheer panels are "tumbled home" to reduce windage and improve paddle clearance. Like all Chesapeake Light Craft kayak kits, the decks are smoothly cambered, not cut up into a faceted, homebuilt appearance.

West Greenland-style hulls provide telepathic handling to the skilled paddler, while initial and secondary stability are ample for the newly initiated. On the water, the Shearwater demonstrates excellent poise and responsiveness in a broad range of conditions, edging turns easily when leaned buy tracking straight when pushed hard in surf. A cutaway bow and skeg-like stern ensures tracking even in extremely rough water. The relatively low profile means you'll spend less time on corrective strokes and more time covering ground.

The Shearwater design abounds in interesting and innovative features. To emphasize the clean lines, the decks are computer cut from sapele plywood, a beautiful mahogany with a reddish-brown swirling grain, to contrast with the honey-colored okoume sides and bottoms. Flush hatches are standard. Veteran stitch-and-glue builders will find notable tweaks in the Shearwater kits, including CNC-cut "finger joints" instead of the more typical scarf joints. The finger joints eliminate the alignment step required of scarf joints, so parts are quicker to assemble and impossible to misalign. Another luxury in the Shearwater kits is that 99% of the holes for the wire stitches have been drilled for you by our CNC machine. This means faster assembly and no measuring for bulkhead locations, as those holes are drilled, too.

For 2007 we've added two inches in beam to the Shearwater 14 and 16 models, to fit bigger people. Max payloads range up to 270 pounds.

The 17 is sized for paddlers who weigh from 130 to 220 pounds, max shoe size Men's 12-1/2. The Shearwater 16 accommodates 120-190 lbs, max shoe size Men's 10. The Shearwater 14 is actually 14'6" and is designed for paddlers 100-150 lbs, max inseam of 30", and shoe size 10 max.

A Shearwater Double is in the plans: at 5.64 m it will be a fast and compact tandem, similar in design to the Shearwater "mono" and it will fit in CLC's "Doulbe" lineup between the Mill Creek 16.5 for recreational paddlers, the Chesapeake Double for touring and the Sport Tandem for racing.

Shearwater Hybride

Shearwater Hybride

Cedar-strip kayaks are admired for their beauty and functionality.  Kayaks made entirely of cedar strips require a “strongback” and special molds, which translates into a lot of skilled labor and time.  Why not combine the best qualities of stitch-and-glue plywood kayaks with the beauty of a cedar strip deck?

This is exactly what we have done with the Shearwater Hybrid kayak kits.  We took the standard Shearwater’s graceful hull lines and added a strip-planked deck.  The resulting hybrid of strip and plywood techniques combines the look of a cedar-strip hull with the speedy assembly and great handling of a West Greenland-style hull.  The Shearwater Hybrid is a kayak with elegance and individuality.

Since the hull forms the “strongback” for constructing the strip-planked deck, assembly time is a fraction of an all-strip hull.  Our Shearwater 16 display model took about 100 hours from start to finish!

Here’s how it works.  The Shearwater Hybrid’s hull is identical to the standard Shearwater’s, with computer-cut BS 1088 Okoume panels assembled with “finger joints” so it goes together very, very quickly.  Computer-cut molds are set into the hull with temporary hot glue.  These molds shape and support the deck during construction.  With the kit we include a mixture of dark and medium color western red cedar strips, plus white cedar strips for light accents.  The strips are milled with a “bead and cove” joint so that one slides into the next for perfect joinery.  While we offer suggested patterns, each builder can develop their own unique strip deck design as they assemble their kit.  Run riot with your creativity!  Almost anything is possible.  Parquet decks, anyone?

Once the deck pattern has been established and glued together, the entire deck is gently taken off the hull and the underside fiberglassed.  The molds are removed from the hull, then the deck epoxied back in place, atop structural “sheer clamps.”  Finally, the top of the strip deck is fiberglassed and the cockpit and hatches are added.

As paddling boats, the Shearwaters are sophisticated and fast.  On the water, the Shearwater demonstrates excellent poise and responsiveness in a broad range of conditions, edging turns easily when leaned but tracking straight when pushed hard in surfing conditions. The narrow beam and low profile translates into fewer corrective strokes and more paddling energy spent on covering ground.  The speed and relatively narrow beam means the Shearwaters are not beginner paddling boats, but athletic paddlers and paddlers with intermediate skills will find them an excellent fit.  Shearwater Hybrids are available in 14.5-foot, 16-foot, and 17-foot sizes.
